The Netbook revolution [Photo From flickr via CC, click for source]

Yes, that’s a nod to TWiT and Leo Laporte. So netbooks have as usual been dominating the market of portable computing. They are coming out at such an alarming rate that it is impossible to keep track of everything that is coming your way. Fear not though, because I am always here to make your tech life that much easier by providing you with the round up when you need it the most. Get to the other side for 6 recent netbooks that you need to look out for.

Chrome OS hitting markets next month?

google-chrome-os

Yes, a company is trying to do that right now but my advice is to stay away from them for the time being till someone gets to tear one down and see what its really like. When I said you need to look out, I meant it you know. ;)

So this Chinese company called Lemote is trying to get Google to give them the Chrome OS for their netbooks devices that are planned for release next month. These products that are based on an MIPS-cpu used to run a Linux based OS called Loonux and apparently the name is nothing compared how bad the OS actually was. Hence the interest in Chrome OS, even though Google has explicitly stated that it is not quite ready yet. The devices will sell for $200 but nowhere outside the Asian market in all likelihood.

Haleron Swordfish Net 102 Dual Processor

haleronswordfishdual-sg

Not Dual-core mind you, it is actually dual processor. The first one of its kind in the industry and very likely to be the last one too – I wonder what made them think it would be profitable.

Selling for $449 right at this moment, these netbooks have twice the Atom goodness and hence are likely to give you more power than the average netbook offering. In case you feel like buying the piece, you’d be happy to know that it has 2GB RAM instead of the usual 1GB. There is also Bluetooth, WiFi, 160GB storage, built-in 2G modem and also a 1.2MP webcam.

Do remember that the twin processors will be hogging the battery like crazy, giving you an average battery life of barely over 2.5 hours. So this would make sense only if you are looking for something that is small and battery life does not matter to you much. Also, if you wiling to take the risk with this *interesting* device.

Nokia Booklet 3G has become a Best Buy Exclusive In The US

booklet-3g

Best Buy has snagged the deal for the entirety of the US. Hopefully this won’t be a bad thing because they usually have a nice deal on almost everything. Well, almost.

The main problem is that the device is pretty expensive at retail, given its way-above-average features. The gadget lovers of the US of A were hoping for carrier subsidies that would bring the deal down to at least $800 as was predicted. Seems like that is a no-go right now.

Best Buy has already confirmed that it has secured the exclusive retail rights to the device and hence there is no hope at sight of a carrier picking this one up. The Booklet 3G has a 720p resolution screen, built-in accelerometer, GPS and 3G modem along with OVI maps integration and Windows 7. Now that is one sweet package but the price will still be a concern. At least Nokia is also selling it online. Watch this space for updates as they come by.

Verizon Brings Gateway LT2196u 3G Netbook

lt20 gateway

You get a 3G netbook on the cheap but do not get too excited because you are getting that in exchange of a long-term contract with the carrier.

It is a lackluster offering from a company who no one really cares for but once you see the $500 lowered on a netbook that has 3G inside it, you are likely to get tempted. Be warned that by doing this you will be signing with Verizon for a data plan of $60 per month for 5GB. That’s harsh if you ask me but that is where the discount is coming from.

Other than the 3G love there is the usual Atom processor and, 1GB RAM, WiFi, 3-in-1 card reader and 160GB storage.

Toshiba Brings Out Satellite T100 Series Netbooks

SatelliteT135

They are not calling them netbooks officially but they are of course netbooks to their very core. One good thing about them is the fact that they have more power than Atom powered netbooks because they are powered by Intel’s ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) processors.

The two models are the T115 and T135 and are 11inch and 13inch models respectively. They are to have HD video capabilities and will be coupled with one HDMI port each. All this performance does not affect the battery life though. The T115 is rated at 9hours of battery life and the T135 at 7.5 hours. Now those are quite decent for netbooks that can do HD video (1080p too).

Come October 22nd, they will have Windows 7 and will be on sale.

Asus 1001HA Is Official, Basically Smaller 1005HA

1001ha

Asus has recently updated their support area with a manual that mentions the fact that it is meant for the 1005/1001 series. That leaves no doubt that the differences between the two are not all that much. It is basically a 10inch version of the 1005HA. It has similar styling but has a textured pattern instead of a smooth one on the palm rest. Plus it looks like it is missing the tapered edges that I really liked.

The website that Asus has updated is its Chinese website and there it says that it will have 92% of a full keyboard, WiFi N and a 160GB storage.

Given the fact that Asus has a decent reputation for making netbooks, that the 1005HA is a great netbook and that Asus practically invented this category – I think this can easily become your 10inch little bundle of internet-on-the-move joy. The only thing that is unclear right now is whether it will get out of the Asian markets and come to American and European markets.
